Sorry for my extended absence from the blog.

I have lots of reasons (excuses) for the hiatus but the main one is a total frustration at trying to come up with something witty and humorous at a time when this country of ours is in such a sorry state.

It would seem almost insulting to write about fluff at a time when these are the typical news headlines:  “Two more police officers shot in (name a city) as marchers take to the streets in protest against racism.” Or: “Radical Islamists claim responsibility for latest suicide bombing attack that kills scores in (Name a country). Or:  “Donald Trump continues his march to the presidency as supporters overlook character flaws and outright lies in favor of promised radical changes in the way Washington does business.”  Or: “Hillary vows that, if elected, we’ll return to the good ol’ days of the Clinton White House.” I don’t mind telling you I haven’t been this concerned about the future of the U.S. of A.  since 1962 when President Kennedy stood toe to toe with the Russians over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles 90 miles off our shore in Cuba. If Khrushchev hadn’t blinked and pulled them out, it would most assuredly have resulted in World War III and all those movies about the apocalypse would have become reality as atom bombs began falling from the sky.

Speaking of Cuba, I am glad that, in my lifetime, President Obama and whoever is running the show over there these days, decided it was stupid to continue this neighborly feud that’s been going on now for over 55 years and reopen the doors to diplomacy, trade and tourism.  In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Holiday Vacations..the company that Linda and I have hosted so many tours with over the years, is actually offering a trip to Cuba in December.  Would love to tag along on that one but it doesn’t involve a local host…at least not this time.

It has been a fun summer so far with our Alaska tour consuming much of June..followed by lots of family get-togethers which have become more anticipated and appreciated as time marches on.

It’s sweet corn season again: the biggest temptation I’ve encountered since my battle of the bulge began last October.  I’ve been in a holding pattern since abandoning the prescribed program after less than anticipated results. Time to get back on the weight loss wagon, though. If only there was a diet that didn’t discourage any and all cocktail consumption.  I’ve gotten used to starting each day with a good B.M. (That’s bloody Mary, folks.)

Bottom line is that I’m so grateful for every day..especially when it seems so many old pals are facing life and death struggles mainly with that damn cancer.

So…here’s to your good health my friends along with a vow to return here on a regular basis with observations and commentary on more uplifting topics. Remember, too, it’s nice to know you folks are out there. A simple comment at the bottom is always appreciated..both pro and con.

Now, I’m off to the Hokeness produce stand. The wagon filled with fresh corn on the cob should be rolling in at any time.

  1. The clock and the calendar always win. Live on and do the best you can, no use spending our least years being miserable and trying to be a size we are not, or apparently willing to be.
Live life, enjoy people and keep on truckin’.

  2. Glad to hear that you are back with us. Missed your talent with John Mogen at the Dimock Dairy celebration earlier. Go easy on the corn or you may get the bm’s mixed up. Enjoy.

  3. It was great spending time with you last week. How about some coffee and a walk instead of the bm each morning? Just a thought.

  5. Doug, Glad you are back blogging- missed you! It not only is sweet corn season, but is chokecherry picking season! I don’t know why it is so much fun picking the berries!! Used to take our 4 teen age girls, my wife, & I & we would fill a 5 gallon bucket in no time!! My wife DeeAnn makes the best choke cherry jelly bar none- one of the reasons I pick the berries!! 6. Doug,

Welcome back. Share your concern re the future of the country. But the fundamental problem was identified a while ago by John Adams.

““Because we have no government, armed with power, capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge and licentiousness would break the strongest cords of our Constitution, as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

John Adams, Letter to the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts, 11 October 1798

  7. Thanks for another blog. I check every other day to read your wit and wisdom. With school starting soon wouldn’t be nice to see how the first day of school started for Oslo #97. The rural school about 7 miles south of Volga was attended by the Bjerke. Sterud, Hoff, Johnson, Hillestad and Elverud families. Sometimes I wonder if those were the good old days!
