It’s such a nice day that I thought I’d leave the TV off and get a few things done. Number one was to give those pretty yellow flowers in the yard a second baptism of weed killer because the first one didn’t take.
They must not be Lutheran dandelions.
I have opened the back door to let some fresh air in and hopefully bring with it a few wisps of inspiration as I now assume my familiar position at the computer keyboard. Unfortunately all I hear is the gentle whirr of the overhead fan and a chorus of neighborhood dogs yelping their lungs out.
Talk about inspiration, one starts to bark and all the others within earshot feel compelled to join in. I wonder if it’s just an instinctive reaction or if they’re actually communicating with one another. “Ruff, Ruff…Hey, Sadie what the heck are your masters cookin’ for supper over there..it smells delicious like dead carp or Buster’s butt.” “Yelp, Yelp..It’s Mediterranean. That’s the curry your perceptive snout is picking up. They used to toss me a few scraps and it was real tasty but hot as that German Shepard down the street. They stopped sharing with me, though, because they didn’t get to the back door fast enough to let me out and I left them a little steamy souvenir on the carpet.” Man, that stuff was as hot goin’ out as it was goin’ in.”
“Did you hear about Spike..the neighborhood stud hound?” He hasn’t been the same since his master brought him back from the repair shop. He must have broken something because he was going to get fixed. Something happened there, though, because now he just sits around with his sad-eyed head on his paws as if there’s nothing left to live for. Poor fella. Maybe I should strut by there and give him a little whiff..see if that perks him up a bit.”
Speaking of dogs, we had our grand Shih tzu, Brandie, as a house guest for a couple days this week. She’s ten now and in decent health except her hearing is becoming impaired or, maybe it’s fine and she just figures anything we have to say isn’t worth reacting to.
I miss not having a dog. I think Linda does too..especially when Brandie…after considerable coaxing..makes an impressive leap up on the couch or bed to cuddle and keep you company. Of course she will also annoyingly sit and stare at you each and every time a morsel of food is consumed waiting for us to crumble at the site of those pathetic eyes and allow a crumb to fall in her direction. It wouldn’t be so bad if she took a second to actually savor those tidbits that occasionally come her way but she snarfs them down so fast there’s no time for taste buds to activate and appreciate the sacrifice before it’s back to the staring.
If we’d listen to our Desert Daughter in Phoenix, we’d satisfy all our pet requirements with a cat or two. But that’s not likely to happen; cats don’t care if they look at your or not.

How very true your statements are! I wonder many times what the dogs are saying to each other! Our little Yorkie (Harley) spends most of his time begging to be fed or just sleeping on my lap! He thinks he is a big cattle dog however, so when a calf gets out, I have to keep him inside or he thinks it is his job to put it back into the pen! Man can that little dog run & bark when he is on a mission! Thanks for your blog Doug! We all enjoy each one!!!
Hmmm, I seem to remember when I moved back and it was “it’s just a cat.” And then I see you walking down the hall with Felix in one arm and a can of Pounce in the other. That would’ve been a priceless photo. I love animals, I would love a dog but have no yard. I get my dog fix by caring for dogs the winter people bring and walking the fountain. Cats get a bad rap, mine all fetch and bring the toy back. The “boys” also beg for anything on your plate. I leave nothing unattended. Love your blogs Daddy Doug
I miss having a dog too, but when you travel a quite a bit that just ain’t gonna’ happen.
If you get one of those house plants with legs, as a friend of mine once called them, name him “Chairman Meow.” He can have “Little Red Book,” the Thoughts of Chairman Meow.
Excuse me. I meant Little Red Box of Chairman Meow.
Our cats and I can have pretty decent conversations…if I only knew what I was saying to them. I really have the cat speech down. When I meow and yowl at Blu or Bubbles, the family wonders which cat is making all that racket. I’m not as fluent in dog. 🙂
